I have to add here that I am 74 years old and an owner builder (hands on) and have 47 years of construction work (structural and mechanical) experience behind me. I pride myself on being a perfectionist and for this reason I have to commend TSFC for his expertise on that very subject.

It truly was the scariest moment of our lives. I think the final magnitude was 7.2, but the epicentre was just a couple of kilometres away; it was really close!
Everyone’s ears pricked up when we felt the earth churn in the distance, then as it approached the audible roar took over and then to lose complete control of your body, getting flung around so much you can’t even get through your son’s bedroom door, let alone the front door of the house.
There was a tonne of damage in the village. There was absolutely no damage to our steel framed cabin..

I am a retired mortgage broker and my wife is an accountant. Our son is a specialist crane operator – so building was not, by any stretch of the imagination, our forte. A local builder called in to have a look at the kit and steel floor system here at Ebor. “OVERKILL” was the description he used.As an engineer I think this is very comforting, as with climate change a reality, an engineered design that exceeds the wind rating for the area is peace of mind for the future.Also that engineered design is uncompromised by short cuts that may have been taken and hidden in the build by a builder or their (often) poorly skilled or unprofessional trades staff.
